The GP Rating (General Purpose Rating) is a six-month Pre-Sea Training Program approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. This course provides both theoretical and practical training in General Ship Knowledge and Marine Engineering Knowledge. After successful completion, trainees can join the Merchant Navy as Trainee GP Ratings in either the Deck or Engine Department. They assist in seamanship duties, cargo handling, deck maintenance, machinery operation, and basic engine room tasks onboard ships.

For 10th standard pass candidates, eligibility requires a minimum of 40% aggregate marks with Science and Mathematics as subjects, along with at least 40% marks in English. The qualification must be from a recognized board. Alternatively, candidates who have completed a two-year ITI course from a government-approved institute with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in the final year are also eligible. ITI trades such as Fitter, Electrician, Machinist, Turner, Welder, Motor Mechanic, and related technical fields are accepted, along with 40% marks in English in 10th standard.

Candidates must meet strict medical standards, including unaided vision of 6/6, no color blindness (tested through the Ishihara Chart), and overall physical fitness certified by a DG Shipping-approved doctor as per Merchant Shipping Medical Rules.
