The Certificate Course in Maritime Catering (Saloon Rating) is a six-month Pre-Sea Training Program approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. The course is designed to prepare candidates for careers in the Catering and Hospitality Department onboard Indian and foreign merchant ships. Upon successful completion, trainees can join as Cook, Steward, or Catering Crew and, with further sea service and experience, progress to senior positions such as Chief Cook or Chief Steward.
The Catering and Housekeeping Department plays a vital role in maintaining a comfortable “home away from home” environment for crew members, ensuring their well-being and optimal performance at sea. This program focuses on developing professional skills in culinary arts, food production, food and beverage service, housekeeping, hygiene, and maritime familiarization.
The training includes both theoretical instruction and practical hands-on experience, enabling trainees to perform catering and housekeeping responsibilities independently onboard ships. Candidates are trained to assist the Ship’s Cook and manage hospitality services efficiently.
Successful trainees are eligible to join the Merchant Navy in the Hospitality Department, opening opportunities for a stable and rewarding maritime career.
