The General Purpose Rating (GP Rating) is a six-month Pre-Sea Training program designed to provide essential knowledge and practical skills required for working onboard merchant ships. The course is conducted in accordance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards and is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India.
This training equips candidates with foundational knowledge in seamanship and marine engineering routine work. The curriculum includes basic navigation, engineering practices, carpentry, electrical work, swimming, drills, life-saving techniques, fire fighting, ship visits, boat pulling practice, and shipboard safety programs. The program combines both theoretical instruction and hands-on practical training to prepare trainees for real-life onboard responsibilities.
Upon successful completion, candidates are eligible to join the Merchant Navy as Trainee GP Ratings in either the Deck or Engine Department, depending on company requirements. Ratings perform a variety of duties including seamanship tasks, cargo handling, maintenance of deck equipment, operation and maintenance of machinery, and general ship upkeep.
This course provides an entry-level pathway into the maritime industry, offering candidates the opportunity to build a stable and progressive career at sea.

3 weeks agoIf you want to join merchant Navy please don't join this college...... if you want to waste you money and go on a vacation then also please don't choose this college..... Our batch was exempted from conducting STCW exam after paying fees and we had to do it from another college.....our succeeding batch's gp exam was banned for 6months.... All they care is money and fines....no good food no good toilet facilities not even good faculties....many students like me had joined there by mistakes or got cheated by agents....... It was even blacklisted for some years by the dg.... Even if we passed out with this college's gp certificate other colleges and companies take it as a joke... Kindly don't choose this college
