The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) is a one-year pre-sea training program designed for students who aspire to build a career as Deck Officers in the Merchant Navy. This course provides foundational knowledge and practical training in navigation, seamanship, cargo operations, maritime safety, and shipboard responsibilities. Upon successful completion of the diploma, cadets join ships as Trainee Cadet Officers to complete their required sea service.
The course is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India. After completing twelve months of mandatory sea service and clearing the required examinations, candidates become eligible for the Second Mate’s Foreign-Going Certificate of Competency, awarded by D.G. Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. This certification enables them to serve as Navigating Officers on Merchant Navy ships worldwide.
Eligibility requires passing 10th and 12th standard with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as separate subjects, securing the prescribed aggregate marks in PCM and at least 50% marks in English from a recognized board. Candidates must be between 17 and 25 years of age at the time of course commencement. Final selection is subject to a stringent medical examination conducted by a DGS-approved doctor as per prescribed maritime medical standards.
