The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) is a 12-month pre-sea training program that leads to a B.Sc. (Applied Nautical Science) degree. After completing the pre-sea course, cadets undergo 18 months of Structured Shipboard Training (SSTP) onboard vessels, followed by 4 months of advanced courses. Candidates then appear for the 2nd Mate Examination conducted under the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping). Upon passing and obtaining the Certificate of Competency (CoC), they are eligible to work globally as 3rd Officers. With required sea time and further examinations, they can progress to higher ranks such as Chief Mate and Captain.

Admission requires qualification in Indian Maritime University (IMU-CET) with a rank below 4000. Eligibility includes 10+2 with minimum 70% in PCM and 50% in English, or relevant B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech qualifications with specified marks. Candidates must meet strict medical and physical standards as per STCW guidelines. Two batches commence annually in February and August.
