After completing 18 months of sea service and earning the Certificate of Proficiency (COP), they can advance to the rank of Able Seaman (AB) or Oiler.

Eligibility includes minimum 40% in 10th standard with Science and Mathematics, 40% in English, along with either a 2-year ITI (relevant trade) with 50% marks or a recognized Diploma/Degree. Candidates must meet medical fitness standards as per STCW regulations.
