The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) programme at Tolani Maritime Institute (TMI) is a one-year pre-sea deck cadet course leading to a Diploma in Nautical Science awarded by Indian Maritime University (IMU). This is followed by 18 months (three semesters) of onboard ship training, after which candidates are awarded the Advanced Diploma in Nautical Science (ADNS). Upon completion of sea training and passing the Second Mate Certificate of Competency examination conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping, candidates also receive a B.Sc. (Applied Nautical Science) degree from IMU. The first year consists of onshore training that builds a foundation in navigation, ship operations, cargo handling, shipping trade, and environmental sciences.
Admission is granted only after clearing IMU-CET, and TMI admits 120 company-sponsored candidates for this programme. Sponsorship is provided by reputed shipping companies such as Fleet Management, MSC, TORM, V-Ships, Wilhelmsen Ship Management, and others. Eligibility requires a maximum age of 25 years, minimum 60% marks in PCM in 10+2, and at least 50% in English (shipping companies often prefer 70% PCM in first attempt). Candidates must meet DG Shipping medical standards, including 6/6 eyesight (no color blindness), certified by DG-approved doctors.
The selection process includes clearing IMU-CET, interviews and medicals conducted by sponsoring companies, issuance of sponsorship letters, fee payment, and reporting to TMI. The one-year training cost is approximately ₹6.78 lakh for boys and ₹5.73 lakh for girls (excluding IMU and exam fees). Education loan assistance and possible scholarships may be provided by sponsoring companies. Refunds are subject to institute policy based on the withdrawal date.
