Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) is a 1-year pre-sea course conducted at SIMS, Lonavala, after which candidates join ships as Deck Cadets. This is followed by 18 months of structured sea-time training onboard a vessel, during which cadets receive free boarding, lodging, and a stipend. After completing sea service, candidates must obtain the Second Mate’s Certificate of Competency from the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Government of India, which qualifies them to sail as a Third Officer. Upon obtaining the CoC, they are also awarded a B.Sc. (Applied Nautical Science) degree from Indian Maritime University (IMU).
Eligibility requires candidates to be unmarried and within the prescribed age limits (17–20 years for Class XII entry, up to 22 years for B.Sc., and up to 25 years for B.E./B.Tech). Academic results must be from the first attempt through regular boards, with minimum 60% aggregate and 60% in PCM, along with specific minimum marks in Physics and Mathematics. English must have at least 50% in Class X or XII. Candidates must clear IMU-CET, hold a valid passport, and meet strict medical standards as per DG Shipping, including no colour blindness, specified eyesight (6/6 and 6/9), minimum height and weight criteria, and BMI between 19 and 27.
