The Electro Technical Officer (ETO) Training programme is designed to prepare candidates for a highly specialized role onboard merchant navy vessels, where the ETO is responsible for managing and maintaining all electrical and electronic equipment, unlike engine officers who handle engine watchkeeping. The course at SIMS includes four months of residential pre-sea training at a state-of-the-art Ship-in-Campus facility, followed by eight months of onboard training as a Trainee ETO. After successful completion, candidates must pass the Certificate of Competency (COC) examination conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India. Upon obtaining the COC, they become eligible to serve as an Electro Technical Officer on merchant ships, with opportunities for campus placement through leading international shipping companies.
Candidates must be unmarried and not more than 28 years of age at the commencement of the course. They must hold a BE/B.Tech degree in Electrical, Electronics, Electrical and Electronics, Electronics and Telecommunication/Communication, Electronics and Instrumentation, or an equivalent AICTE/UGC-recognized qualification with at least 55% marks in the final year, completed within four years and with not more than six total arrears/attempts. English must be scored at a minimum of 50% in Class X or XII. Applicants must meet DG Shipping medical standards, including no colour blindness, prescribed eyesight limits, height, weight, BMI between 19 and 27, and possession of a valid passport before joining.
