The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) program provides comprehensive training in navigation, seamanship, and maritime safety, in accordance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) for Seafarers. It is designed to prepare candidates for careers as Deck Officers, with opportunities to pursue a B.Sc. in Applied Nautical Science and obtain a Certificate of Competency. The curriculum, approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, includes on-campus workshops, practical training, and instruction from experienced faculty, ensuring proficiency in navigation, maritime operations, and safety regulations. Eligible candidates include those who have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) with at least 60% aggregate and 50% in English, or possess a B.Sc. in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, or Electronics with Physics as a subject with a minimum of 60% in the final year, or hold a B.E./B.Tech. degree with at least 50% in the final year and over 60% in PCM at 10+2. Candidates must be sponsored by a DGS-approved company, unmarried, possess a valid passport, and qualify in the IMU-CET. The minimum age is 17 years, with maximum limits varying by category: for males—General 25, OBC (NCL) 28, SC/ST 30; for females—General 27, OBC (NCL) 30, SC/ST 32, calculated as on 01-08-2024. Medical requirements include unaided vision of 6/6 in each eye, no color blindness (tested via Ishihara Chart), and overall fitness for sea service certified by a DGS-approved doctor.
