The Pre-Sea Training for GP Ratings is a six-month residential course approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India. The course commences twice a year on 1st January and 1st July. It covers combined Deck and Engineering subjects, and after completion, candidates appear for external examinations conducted by the Board of Examination for Seafarers Trust under DG Shipping. Successful candidates are issued an Indian CDC and become eligible to work onboard ships worldwide as trainee OS (Ordinary Seaman), trainee fitter, trainee oiler, or trainee engine room cadet (for diploma holders).
Eligibility requires 10th pass with minimum 40% aggregate in Mathematics and Science and 40% in English. The age limit is 17.5 to 25 years, with a 5-year relaxation for SC/ST candidates. Candidates must be medically fit as per M.S. Medical Examination Rules, 2000, with 6/6 eyesight in each eye without visual aids and normal colour vision.
Admission is through an entrance test conducted by the Board of Examination for Seafarers Trust. The total revised course fee is ₹2,30,000, including admission, tuition, STCW courses, CDC/INDoS formalities, uniform, boarding, and miscellaneous charges.
