The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) program is a DG Shipping–approved Pre-Sea course that complies with the STCW Convention of IMO and is affiliated with the Indian Maritime University (IMU). It is designed to train candidates to become Officers in Charge of a Navigational Watch in the Merchant Navy. The course begins in February and August each year and includes 12 months of residential pre-sea training at the institute (Greater Noida), followed by 18 months of onboard ship training under IMU’s Distance Learning Programme.
During pre-sea training, cadets study Navigation, Seamanship, Ship Construction, Stability, MARPOL, Marine Engineering Knowledge, English, Human Factors, and workshop practices. After completing two semesters, IMU awards a Diploma in Nautical Science. Upon finishing onboard semesters (3, 4, 5), an Advanced Diploma in Nautical Science is awarded. Candidates must then complete a 4-month Second Mate (FG) post-sea course and pass DG Shipping examinations to obtain the Certificate of Competency (CoC) as Second Mate and B.Sc. (Nautical Science) degree.
Eligibility at Fleet Management requires maximum age 20 years, 70% in PCM and English in 12th (no open board/NIOS), height minimum 160 cm, BMI 17.5–25, and 6/6 eyesight without color blindness. Career progression leads from Second Mate to Chief Officer (First Mate FG) and eventually Master (Captain) after required sea service and examinations.
