The GP Rating (General Purpose Rating) course at International Maritime Institute (IMI) is a 6-month residential Pre-Sea training program approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India. The course provides combined training in Deck and Engine departments, preparing candidates to work onboard merchant ships as Trainee GP Ratings. The syllabus covers seamanship, cargo handling, deck maintenance, marine engineering knowledge, machinery operation, swimming, firefighting, lifesaving, workshop training, and ship visits. After completion, candidates appear for examinations conducted by the Board of Examination for Seafarers (BES). Successful candidates receive the Indian CDC and become eligible for global ship employment as Trainee OS, Fitter, Oiler, or Engine Room Cadet (for diploma holders).
Eligibility requires minimum 10th pass with 50% in Mathematics & Science and 50% in English (10th/12th). For 12th candidates, minimum 50% in PCM is required. The age limit is 17.5–25 years. Open board/NIOS and improvement results are not accepted. Physical standards include minimum height 157 cm, BMI ≤25, no speech deformity, and 6/6 eyesight without color blindness.
Career progression includes Trainee OS → Able Bodied Seaman (AB) → Bosun → Officer level (after required sea service and exams). Admission involves registration, entrance test, interview, and medical examination.

Impressive infrastructure and even a training ship right on campus for hands on training experience. Knowledgeable faculty members with strong industry experience. Good food and well maintained hostel facilities.
