The B.Sc. Nautical Science programme at Tolani Maritime Institute (TMI) is a three-year undergraduate course structured into six academic semesters and governed by prescribed academic rules. After completing three years of campus-based training, students must undergo one year of structured onboard training at sea or in marine-related activities. Along with classroom and practical training, students are encouraged to actively participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities to support their overall development.
The curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation in nautical science for aspiring deck officers, along with exposure to humanities and social sciences. It gradually focuses on specialised theoretical and practical knowledge required for navigation, cargo operations, ship maintenance, and ship operations. The programme aims to prepare students to become competent watch-keeping officers capable of handling navigational and cargo responsibilities effectively.
Practical training is a major focus of the course. Students receive hands-on experience in a mock shipboard environment that replicates real-life conditions at sea. Training includes engineering mathematics, physics, navigation, cargo operations, practical seamanship, maintenance techniques, boat handling, sailing, rope climbing, and ladder climbing. By the end of the third year, students complete all mandatory modular maritime courses and gain essential practical skills in tool handling, maintenance procedures, and shipboard operations, making them ready for structured sea training.
