The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) is a one-year pre-sea training program approved by the Directorate General of Shipping and affiliated with MIT Art Design and Technology University. The course is conducted at Maharashtra Academy of Naval Education and Training (MANET). After successful completion, cadets receive a pre-sea certificate and join ships as Deck Cadets.
The program includes two semesters of six months each, followed by 18 months of Structured Shipboard Training (SSTP) onboard ships. During sea training, cadets receive a stipend along with free boarding and lodging.
Admission requires passing IMU CET and meeting eligibility criteria: 10+2 with at least 60% in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) and 50% in English. Candidates must be below 25 years of age (with relaxations for reserved categories and women), unmarried, and medically fit as per DGS standards. A valid passport is mandatory.
Strict medical standards cover physical fitness, eyesight (no color blindness), hearing, cardiovascular health, and overall mental and physical well-being. This course prepares students for a career as navigating officers in the Merchant Navy.
