The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) leading to B.Sc. in Nautical Science is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India, and affiliated to Indian Maritime University, Chennai. The course duration is one year at the institute followed by 18 months of onboard ship training, with an additional six months for examinations and related requirements. The course commences on 1st August and 1st February every year. The institute is required to ensure onboard training after successful completion of the course, which is mandatory for obtaining the Certificate of Competency issued by DG Shipping, Mumbai.
Eligibility requires 10+2 with PCM and minimum 60% aggregate, or B.Sc. with Physics as a subject and 55% in final year, or B.E./B.Tech degree. Candidates must have minimum 50% in English (10th, 12th, or degree). The maximum age limit is 25 years, relaxable by 2 years for girls. Medical fitness as per M.S. Medical Examination Rules, 2000 is mandatory, including 6/6 eyesight in each eye without aids and no color blindness.
Total course fee is ₹5,00,000. Including IMU registration fee of ₹35,000, the total payable amount is ₹5,35,000.
