The Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS) is a one-year residential program designed to provide foundational training in marine navigation, seamanship, cargo operations, and maritime safety. The course prepares students for a career as Deck Officers in the Merchant Navy. Upon successful completion, candidates become eligible to appear for the examinations leading to the Certificate of Competency (CoC) as a Deck Officer, issued by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India, and recognized internationally.
Eligibility includes 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) securing a minimum of 60% aggregate and at least 50% marks in English in 10th or 12th standard. Alternatively, candidates with a B.Sc degree (Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, or Electronics with Physics as a subject) with 55% marks in the final year, or a B.E./B.Tech degree from an AICTE-recognized institution with 50% marks, may apply. A minimum of 50% marks in English at 10th, 12th, or degree level is mandatory.
The course is open to unmarried candidates aged 17 to 25 years (age relaxations applicable as per category norms). Candidates must meet strict medical standards, including 6/6 vision in the better eye, no color blindness, and fitness certification from a DG Shipping-approved doctor.
