Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) is a one-year postgraduate programme designed for candidates holding a BE/B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture from an AICTE/UGC-approved institute or IIT/NIT, with a minimum of 55% marks in the final year and completion within four years (maximum six backlogs/attempts allowed). The course prepares candidates to join ships as Junior Engineers for six months of onboard training, during which they receive free boarding, lodging, and a stipend. After completing sea training, candidates appear for the Marine Engineer Officer (MEO) Class IV Certificate of Competency (CoC) examination conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Government of India. On obtaining the CoC, they become eligible to sail as a Fourth Engineer and can progress to higher ranks with further sea time and examinations.
Candidates must be unmarried and within the prescribed age limits (maximum 25 years for BE/B.Tech and 26 years for ME/M.Tech at course commencement). English must be one of the subjects with at least 50% marks in Class X or XII. They must meet DG Shipping medical standards, including no colour blindness, specified eyesight limits (corrective lenses permitted within limits), minimum height and weight criteria, BMI between 19 and 27, and possession of a valid passport before joining the course.
