Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) is a 12-month professional program designed specifically for candidates who have already completed a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and wish to pursue a career in the merchant navy as marine engineers. The course is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India and follows international standards of the STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping) Convention. It focuses on developing the technical knowledge and practical skills required to operate, maintain, and manage shipboard machinery and marine engines efficiently.
The curriculum includes theoretical training in marine engineering, thermodynamics, shipboard machinery, electrical systems, and marine auxiliary equipment, along with extensive practical workshops for hands-on experience. Additionally, candidates undergo mandatory STCW courses, which cover safety, firefighting, and survival techniques to ensure preparedness for onboard operations.
Eligibility criteria include a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with no backlogs, a maximum age of 24 years, minimum height of 165 cm, BMI between 17.5–25, normal speech and hearing, and 6/6 eyesight without visual aids. Candidates must also hold a valid passport and meet medical fitness standards as per DG Shipping norms.
After completing the course and 6 months of onboard sea training, candidates are eligible to appear for the Class IV Part ‘B’ examination. Upon passing, they are awarded a Class IV Certificate of Competency, allowing them to work as Certified Engineer Officers on merchant vessels globally. This program opens up lucrative career opportunities in the global shipping industry, including positions such as Junior Engineer, Engine Cadet, or Officer in Charge of Engineering Watch.
