The General Purpose (GP) Rating Course is a six-month, DG Shipping–approved residential program designed to prepare candidates for entry-level roles in the Deck and Engine departments of Indian and foreign merchant vessels. On successful completion, candidates are eligible to join shipping companies as Deck/Engine Crew. With further sea service and experience, they can be promoted to positions such as Motorman, Oiler, Fitter, Deck Serang, Able-Bodied Seaman (AB), and Bosun, and may later progress to officer level by meeting sea-time and examination requirements prescribed by DGS.
The course commences every January and July and has a sanctioned intake of 40 candidates per batch.
Eligibility (as per DGS norms) includes 10th pass with 40% aggregate (English, Mathematics, Science), or 12th pass (any stream) with 40% aggregate, or a 2-year ITI (relevant trades) with 40% marks, along with minimum 40% in English. Candidates must be 17½ to 25 years of age, with applicable age relaxations for SC/ST, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), and women candidates.
