The General Purpose (GP) Rating course is a six-month, DG Shipping–approved residential program designed to prepare candidates for entry-level roles in the Deck and Engine departments of merchant vessels. On successful completion, candidates become eligible to join Indian and foreign shipping companies as Deck or Engine crew members.
With further sea service and experience, candidates can progress to positions such as Motorman, Oiler, Fitter, Deck Serang, Able-Bodied Seaman (AB), and Bosun. With additional sea time, qualifications, and by clearing examinations conducted by DG Shipping, they may also advance to the officer level.
Eligibility requires passing 10th Standard (Xth) from a recognized board with Science and Mathematics as subjects, along with a minimum of 40% marks in English. Candidates must be between 17.5 and 25 years of age at the time of course commencement.
This program provides a strong foundation for candidates seeking to begin their career in the Merchant Navy.

3 months agoDecent institute with standard facilities. The theoretical curriculum covers the basics well, but the practical, hands-on marine training could be improved. Faculty is generally helpful but administrative processes can take some time.
