The General Purpose Rating (GP Rating) is a 6-month Pre-Sea Training program followed by 6 months of Structured Shipboard Training. It prepares candidates to work in both Deck and Engine departments of merchant ships. GP Ratings are trained in seamanship, maintenance, cargo handling support, and engine room assistance. Depending on company requirements, they may serve in either department.
After completing 6 months onboard training and obtaining the Certificate of Watchkeeping (COW), candidates are promoted to Ordinary Seaman (OS) or Wiper. After completing 18 months of sea service and earning the Certificate of Proficiency (COP), they can advance to the rank of Able Seaman (AB) or Oiler.
Eligibility includes minimum 40% in 10th standard with Science and Mathematics, 40% in English, along with either a 2-year ITI (relevant trade) with 50% marks or a recognized Diploma/Degree. Candidates must meet medical fitness standards as per STCW regulations.
