The General Purpose Rating (GP Rating) course is a pre-sea training program designed for candidates who wish to build a career in the Merchant Navy. This course can be pursued after completing 10th standard and serves as an entry-level pathway into the maritime industry. It prepares students for practical onboard duties in both the Deck and Engine Departments. GP Ratings assist in seamanship tasks, cargo handling, maintenance work, machinery operations, and general shipboard activities.

The course offers an exciting and adventurous career at sea, along with attractive financial prospects and long-term growth opportunities. It is suitable for students who are physically fit, hardworking, and willing to adapt to life at sea.

Eligibility requires passing 10th standard from a recognized education board with a minimum of 40% aggregate marks and at least 40% marks in English. Candidates must be between 17.5 and 25 years of age at the time of course commencement. For diploma or degree holders, the upper age limit may extend up to 27 years.

Final selection is subject to a stringent medical examination conducted by a Directorate General of Shipping (DGS)-approved doctor as per prescribed maritime medical standards.
