The General Purpose Rating (GPR) programme is designed to prepare candidates for a career at sea by providing both theoretical knowledge and practical training. The course consists of 6 months of pre-sea training conducted onshore, followed by 9 months of structured shipboard training, where candidates gain hands-on experience in real working conditions on board a vessel. Upon successful completion of the training, candidates become eligible for employment with shipping companies worldwide.
Interested candidates must apply through the online application form and pay the prescribed application fee. After the application process, further instructions are provided by the institute’s admissions office. Eligible candidates are invited for a personal interview at the GEIMS campus in Lonavala. Those shortlisted after the interview are required to undergo a comprehensive medical examination in Mumbai, as per the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000. The final merit list is prepared based on eligibility criteria, performance in the personal interview, and medical fitness. Selected candidates must pay a non-refundable booking amount within the given deadline to confirm their admission.
